MP3 Torture

by Lynn on June 14, 2009

I decided to try and start a running program again. I like to get into the gym but lately I’ve been slacking off on weight lifting (which I like) because of a pesky shoulder. So I decided to give the aerobic running thing (which I don’t like so much) another shot. (Yeah, yeah, I know it’s good for me.)

One program which I used before with some success is the Couch to 3K program. This is a 3-time a week program which starts you off with intervals of walking and running. Over time you do more and more running and less and less walking.

There is actually a web site devoted to this, www.c25k.com. It gives you the schedule and lots of motivational articles as well as a forum where you can gripe along with other beginners about how much harder it is for you than everyone else.

The cool link of the site however is a link to Podrunner Intervals. Podrunner Intervals contains of MP3 music sets that includes audio cues to switch between running and walking. This solves one of my biggest problems, getting bored and staring at my watch saying, “How much longer?”

The only problem with the MP3 file is that I am certain they added at least two extra running segments…

What will you get for your money?

by Lynn on February 10, 2009

The Senate today passed an $838,000,000,000 spending bill intended to stimulate the economy. How much money is this?  That’s $2,974 for every man woman and child in the United States. If you have a family of four the government just borrowed $11,173 on your behalf to spend on stimulating the economy.

Now here is the big question: A year from now after (some of) the stimulus money has been spent, what will you get for your money?  Will you be able to look around your community and see your $11,173?

To put this in perspective that works out to a grand total for the city of Tullahoma of about $50 million dollars.  A year from now, will you be able to see $50,000,000 in benefit from the Stimulus Package?

Ok, I know I am jumping on the bandwagon very late, but I have set up a twitter feed.

It’s woefully dull with a few test posts, but here it is:

Advantage Palin

by Lynn on October 2, 2008

It’s too late to put together a well reasoned thoughtful post on the debate. And besides, I like using bullet points. So, some semi-random thoughts on the debate.

  • The two candidates had different goals.  Biden’s goal was to attack McCain. Palin’s goal was to reassure Americans that she is the real deal. Both did an admirably job of accomplishing their goal
  • You will hear pundits talk about who won on “points.”  This is because all those journalists went to some Ivy League school where they had to take a debate class which was scored on whether you answered every point your opponent made.  But this is a public political debate. It’s the political equivalent of “Whose Line is it Anyway?”  The points don’t matter.
  • I thought Joe Biden sounded pretty good the first half of the debate. But the last 30 minutes he seemed to get angry and slightly flustered.
  • Can anyone explain to me why Obama and Biden think going to war in Iraq is unforgivable, but going to war in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Darfur, and Bosnia is just peachy? For bonus points explain to me how they will not allow Iran to get nukes, since any discussion of moving against Iran is war-mongering?
  • Is there anyone in the country besides Joe Biden who really thinks John McCain wanted to cut off funding for the troops?
  • Palin made no serious mistakes, looked great, talked directly to Americans and generally looked competent. Early reactions seem to indicate most people liked Sarah.  A bad performance could have nearly derailed the McCain campaign, which is suffering this week. Her strong performance will allow the McCain campaign to turn their attention fully toward the remaining debates and final push. Biden didn’t land any blows against McCain that haven’t already been repeated a dozen times. Therefore, advantage Palin.

Yes, That’s His Real Name

by Lynn on October 2, 2008

My friend Rip Van Winkle is running for state representative in the 37th district.

When it comes to being a conservative, Rip is the real deal.  Rip lives in Van Buren county and was elected to the county commission despite being a Republican in a Democrat-leaning county.

Check out his website, VanWinkle37.com.

And if you get a chance to meet Rip, get him aside for a few minutes and ask him how he got his name…
